IV dental sedation is one of the most efficient and comfortable methods to help patients stay relaxed and comfortable during their dental procedures. It is an excellent and stress-free solution for people who have small mouth, dental anxiety, bad gag reflex, and/or low pain tolerance.

If you’re contemplating getting an IV dental sedation for your procedure, here’s what you need to know about how it works and how you can get the most from your experience.

How It Works

To ensure the patient’s safety, dentists receive additional training in the administration of IV sedation medications, such as Versed, Valium, and Ativan.

To receive IV dental sedation, you must undergo a dental examination. Your dentist will review your medical history and current medications and ask you some questions about your health. Together, you and your dentist will discuss your options and how to prepare for your procedure/s.

IV dental sedation is administered through a thin needle inserted into a vein in your arm. It gradually induces a feeling of ease and sleepiness. Your vital signs and oxygen levels will be constantly monitored during the procedure.

How Can I Prepare for IV Dental Sedation?

There are some simple steps you must take to ensure the best outcome. They include:

  • Having an adult friend or relative drive you to and from your appointment
  • Fasting from eating or drinking according to the amount of time specified by your dentist (usually six to eight hours prior to your appointment)
  • Wearing loose, comfortable clothing
  • Removing contacts lenses, dentures, and jewelry
  • Taking your usual prescriptions as directed by your dentist (he may ask you to omit some until after your appointment)
  • Arranging for time off from work the day of and the day after your procedure
  • Postponing any heavy lifting, driving, operating heavy machinery, or making any important life decisions until two days after your procedure
