IV Sedation in Plantation, FL

IV sedation is sometimes referred to as “conscious sedation.” That’s because patients can respond to commands, but they are deeply relaxed and feel nearly no anxiety or pain at all during the procedure. Patients in the worst pain and most severe anxiety often benefit from this sedation method. It’s a safe and effective way to dull the sensations of dental procedures, and the patient won’t remember much about the treatment afterward.

Advantages of IV sedation

  • Safe and easy for the dentist to administer and monitor.
  • Patients often feel no pain during the procedure.
  • Subtle relaxation effects such as sleepiness and feeling light-headed are common with this form of sedation, but patients generally aren’t completely unconscious.
  • It can be used alongside other sedatives, such as nitrous oxide.
  • Allows for lengthy dental procedures that would otherwise require multiple visits to complete.
  • It may result in less discomfort and anxiety following treatment compared to other forms of sedation.
  • Does not typically cause side effects or negative health effects in most patients.
  • Reduces the risk of traumatic injury during dental treatments in patients that may have difficulty staying still during treatment.

If your dentist has recommended a procedure that is more extensive than you can comfortably tolerate, ask about the use of IV sedation at your next appointment.

Is IV sedation safe?

Sometimes referred to as “sleep dentistry,” IV sedation is considered very safe. A certified dentist administers the medicine through an IV so that we can easily control the amount of sedative going into your system. This will help us keep you comfortable during treatment while ensuring that you get through your appointment without discomfort, fear, or anxiety.

IV sedation wears off after a few hours, so you’ll have to arrange for someone to drive you to and from the appointment. It’s safe for you to resume your normal activities as soon as the effects wear off. If you’re still unsure whether you might be a good candidate for conscious sedation, call our office to schedule a consultation with our dentist and discuss your options. We’ll work with you to determine if this is right for you.
