Dental veneers have made it possible to have a perfect set of teeth for people with chipped, stained, or misshapen teeth. Veneers are shells that are placed on top of your natural teeth. They are customized to your mouth and are made of either porcelain or composite resin.

Veneers are classified as a cosmetic procedure and with the right cosmetic dentist, you can get natural-looking results. While it may be a cosmetic procedure, the effects go far beyond aesthetics. Veneers can help improve your bite and speech. They can also help prevent dental conditions, such as cavities and gum disease, because they make cleaning your teeth and gums easier. With an improved smile, you can feel more confident about yourself knowing that you have a beautiful smile.

If you are interested in learning more about veneers, here’s what the process of getting them is like.

Dental Veneers Procedure

In most cases, the procedure is completed in two separate sessions, however, cosmetic dentists can do it for you in a single session if resin-based composite veneers are used. For porcelain veneers, two sessions will be necessary since it takes time for a laboratory to complete your custom veneers.

During the preliminary session, your dentist will examine your teeth and take X-rays.

The dentist will then trim your teeth’s enamel to prepare them for the veneers, which will be bonded directly onto the teeth. In order for the veneers to hold to the enamel, they should not go over the edges, which is why trimming is necessary. For most people, only half a millimeter of enamel will be removed.

After trimming your teeth to the necessary thickness, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth using a mold and will submit it to a laboratory for the creation of your custom veneers. You will be sent home and will come back once your veneers are ready.

To place the veneers, your dentist will check if the veneers fit properly, and if they look natural on your teeth. Next, your dentist will proceed to cleaning your teeth thoroughly, making sure the surface of your natural teeth is good enough for the veneers to adhere to. Then, the veneers will be attached to each tooth with special cement and will be harden using ultraviolet light.

After the procedure, your dentist will schedule a follow-up to ensure the veneers remain bonded properly. Properly bonded veneers can last anywhere between five to ten years, depending on the experience level of the cosmetic dentist, the material of the veneers, and how well you maintain them.
