Not all people are born with a good set of teeth. In fact, most people have to seek the services of orthodontic treatments to get a neat, clean, and beautiful smile. One effective way to straighten your teeth is through braces. Nowadays, you have many options to choose from when it comes to braces. Here are different kinds of braces your dentist may recommend.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are known as traditional braces. You can identify them through two primary components: metal brackets on each tooth and a metal wire that runs across the teeth. A dentist applies the metal brackets to the teeth and then threads them through a bendable wire. The wire is tightened gradually over time to slowly move the teeth in different directions.

This is the most common type of braces and is also the least expensive choice. Metal braces are considered one of the fastest ways to move teeth to achieve the ideal smile. While metal braces are not a big issue for children, they can be less preferred by adults. This is because they are highly visible in the mouth.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are almost the same as traditional braces. The only difference is that dentists use clear and transparent ceramic materials instead of the standard metal wires, making them less visible than metal braces. This is why they are preferred more often by adults who do not like the look of metal braces.

Invisalign Braces

An alternative to traditional braces that is even less visible than ceramic braces is Invisalign. Invisalign helps straighten out teeth without having to use standard brackets and wires. It involves the use of a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners or retainers dedicated to slowly shift your teeth toward the proper positions.

Invisalign aligners are comfortable to wear and easily removable. You will need to visit your dentist every 6 to 8 weeks to monitor your progress and to make changes to your aligners.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces function the same way as metal braces. The only difference between these two, however, is that lingual braces are on the inside of the bite. This variety is contrary to the placement of traditional braces, which is on the outward facing side of teeth. Lingual braces are not an option for everyone, so speak with your dentist about whether you should consider them.

Palatal Expanders

There are two remedies for those who have overcrowded teeth. One solution is tooth extraction. This leads to more room for the rest of the teeth to be adjusted in, which ends up giving you straight and even teeth. Nowadays, however, orthodontists offer palatal expanders, which are devices used to expand the jaw, so teeth can fit better within it.
